Seachem Media and Purigen Questions
I have two of these filters on a 5.5 gallon and one on a 10 gallon. I have always just used the sponge and cartridges you buy for them but recently I have read that a lot of people use Seachem Media and Purigen in your filters instead.

I have never used them. How should I use them? How much would I need for the 5 and 10 gallon tanks. How exactly does it work? What makes it better? Instead of those expensive bags can I just use panty hose? Actually basically I just need Intro to Seachem Media 101. I have never used it at all. Also how would I go about changing to this type of media in an already cycled/established tank?

These would be the two I buy:

Thank you all for any help!

I think I may have answered you on the Seachem Forum as there was recently a question there about the Aquatech 5/15 - Rick?...

Seachem Matrix is a dime size porous bio-media with micro/macro pores that serve as a platform for beneficial bacteria. They also market a smaller size as De*Nitrate.
The claim is that aerobic bacteria to process/oxidize ammonia and nitrites on the surface and anaerobic bacteria will populate internally to process nitrates. The latter becomes difficult. I have an AC70 filter running now filled completely with a mix of Matrix and De*Nitrate. You really won't be able to effectively use Matrix in an Aquatech 5/15.

Seachem Purigen is a synthetic polymer resin that adsorbs dissolved organic compounds, preventing them from degrading further and producing ammonia. It aids in producing crystal clear water while removing DOCs from the water column. This media begins creamy white and slowly turns quite brown as it traps organics (exhausts). However, it can be regenerated several times using a 50/50 bleach/water mix, followed by de-chlorination.
I am currently using two 100ml pouches in my 60g tank.
I believe you could slip a 100ml pouch in front (tank side) of the Aquatech 5/15 cartridge.

Like most cartridge HOB's, the Aquatech 5/15 is not really designed for anything other than it's cartridge. You might get a little creative, but it's still limited.
