sand or gravel?

im planning to get a 55 gallon tank in a couple of months and i want to be prepared. right now i have gravel, but i want to have somehting different in my tank. right now im think of which type of substrate i should use.

i liked sand, but im not sure. what are the pros and cons of having sand or gravel, or maybe both.

I am beginning to think something inbetween is best. Really small grian gravel, not sand but not large gravel. It gives a lot more option to kinda move it aorund and have it stay put like gravel but won't compact as much as sand could causing dead spots and bad things to happen.

I know am using a gravel that is about the size of large grain rice, maybe wild rice. It seems to be working really well, is easy tomove aorund and is a natural darker color.
