Buying fish and plants online?

Hello everyone

The best aquarium around my area closed down. The 2-3 other places that I have called has a very poor selection of plants and fish so I was looking at buying some fish or plants (cories and java ferns) online but before I do I would like some info from this forum.

To buy fish and plants online or to not to that is the question? :-D

Thanks in advance

i ordered my plants from aquariumplants.com. they should be here friday afternoon. i can tell you how they look and also take some pics. the only downside to buying online is that shipping for fish has to be next day air so shipping cost is like 32 dollars. even for plants 2nd day air was 16 dollars not to bad tho. liveaquaria.com has something like if you spend 250 dollars free shipping but thats still alot. check out AquaBid.com - Sell or buy aquarium equipment and fish in an auction format. ive never ordered fish online.....

I have purchased plenty of aquarium stock online. Plants, inverts, Cories/fish, food (live). In the states, Petsmart and Petco are killing the hobby. The only way to get uncommon stock is to belong to an aquarium society and trade or live in a huge city where the smaller shops can still thrive. I know many areas on the east coast that have little in the way of private fish shops. The negative with buying online is the freight cost. $20 to $50 is what you should expect to pay. Each of my online fish purchases have been between $80 to $130. I have only had 1 fish arrive dead and 2 fish not survive the first week. ( out of ~30 fish/ 10%). Acceptable rate in my book.

aquabid.com I have not had an issue yet. Aquabid is similar to ebay so it all depends on the seller. Just read the comments others have placed and stick with sellers with lots of comments.

corysrus.com. I would suggest that you avoid them. I have heard many negative things about them and it looks like the negativity has finally hurt them as they have little to no stock compared to past years.

thatpetplace.com; I have purchased from them and they did an excellent job packing.

www.wetspottropicalfish.com/ - This place has a huge list of fish, I have never used them but will in the future. This company sells fish on aquabid. If you are looking for some uncommon Cories, this would be a place to look.

I am very lucky to have a smaller shop near me that is 90% aquatic. Wild Things Pet shop can get me pretty much anything I desire. Very rarely does the owner have a tough time finding what I'm looking for. He had a tough time getting me some Jungle Val so I turned to online. I've heard many good things about Mikeswetpets on ebay so I looked him up. Mike is a great guy with quite the selection of plants. I ordered a few different species from him and they all are doing well. His prices are pretty good as well. I've also heard great things about Aquaticjungles.com. Its run by Dustin from Dustinsfishtanks channel on youtube. There is a $40 min order though which doesn't always fit everyone's budget.
