Mystery Snail Eggs
Tonight when I was about to perform a water change I discovered that my gold mystery snail had laid a clutch of eggs in my 10 gallon tank. I've had her since about mid January so I was a bit surprised. But I've also read that they can store sperm so I'm curious if these will hatch or if they're infertile.
I know it can take up to a couple weeks to hatch. What should I look for to tell if they are about to hatch? I do have an empty 5 gallon I may set up for the babies.
They look like a normal cluster but then again even the ones I had that didn't hatch did.
The only way I could tell was when they started to mold or turn black. I actually had better luck with them hatching if I left them and didn't remove them. Once they hatch you can move them if you want to.
Thanks for the reply, fish_4_all.
Yeah, I think I am going to leave them where they are and not try to move them. If they hatch then I'll move the babies to the 5 gallon.
Discovered another egg clutch. This one is on the side of the filter. My gals been busy.
Cool beans! Keep us posted!
I've had them too. I tried to remove the first one but failed - the eggs are too fragile, so I just left them there. Now I have plenty of babies in all four tanks. they are growing fast!
The eggs will change colour from creamy to pinkish, then the tiny babies will appear. As far as I remember it took a couple of weeks. I could be mistaken, though.
Thanks for the info, Mirta. The eggs do now have a pinkish hue to them.
How many babies did you get and what did you do with them all?
I have had tens of babies over some time. I still have them all since I've got 4 tanks. I have distributed them evenly over all my tanks  . Anyway, if they keep having more babies I will have to give them away. I did give away some ten young adults. I hope they are doing fine. I could bring some to our local pet shop, I've talked to them about it. Another option is to start selling them!
They are lovely creatures and the babies are so cute and tender!
This morning I discovered the first clutch of eggs sitting on the bottom of the tank. They must have gotten knocked down by mama snail accidentally. They were still in a nice tight clump. I scooped them out and put them in a ziploc bag with some damp towels. They are floating in the tank. Are they still ok or did they get ruined from being immersed?
They should be OK. It is strange that they had gotten knocked off, though. They are usually very firmly attached. Some of the eggs will not hatch I think.
