Need some brown algae help!

I have a guppy tank that is covered with brown algae and would like to get rid of it. I have tried getting rid of it by cleaning the aquarium sides, dipping the rocks and decorations in hot water but it seems useless. please help.

Is this a new tank? My guppy tank had some brown algae during the first month or two of being set up. I would scrub it off the sides and it would come back later.

If your tank is new, I would suggest cutting down on the amount of time you have the lights on, and just keep up with water changes. It should go away in a little while.

We also need to be certain as to what the "brown algae" actually is. Usually we are dealing with diatoms, commonly referred to as brown algae, and Dragon has correctly commented on that.

But another true algae, actually a green/red type that looks very brown, is a very different issue.

If you can easily remove it with your fingers from decor, plant leaves, etc., then it is diatoms. But if it will not come off without hard scraping, that is the true algae. This is due to light and nutrients.

Byron.
