Ordered rummy nose rasboras; what did I get?
I ordered rummy nose rasboras from an online vendor. They apparently inadvertently sent me rummy nose tetras as well as a singleton fish with a bluish hue. I don't think the blue fish is the rummy nose rasbora because of its size. What do you think it is? It's in the upper left corner.
That's an odd looking fish. It's looks like a hybrid of tetras to me.

Think it might be Cochu's blue tetra?
The rummys are definitely Hemigrammus bleheri. And I tend to agree the oddity is likely Boehlkea fredcochui, though the brightness of the head region might suggest another very similar species of which several are now being discovered. But assuming it is B. fredcochui, I would return it pronto. I had a couple of these mixed in with some wild Hemigrammus hyanuary and they (the Cochu) turned rather nasty in short order due to their lack of an adequately-sized group.
Blech, see, this is the downside of ordering online. I do really like the vendor I got these fish from, but now what? I am not going to pay for return shipping, and I don't want to keep it. I am not above euthanizing fish that are problems in the tank, but that seems wasteful of the world's resources. Fortunately, there is a LFS here that takes my guppy fry, and I bet they will take it and find it an appropriate home.
I think the rummy nose tetra are pretty, and it's very pretty to watch the way they swim so incredibly fast but stick together so well. Maybe I will just keep them instead of insisting they trade me out for the rasbora I had ordered, unless there's a big value difference of which I'm unaware.
Rummys are one of the best shoaling fish in freshwater; my group of 22 are almost always together, swimming down the tank, cruising around plants, back and forth--quite a lovely site. You will like this fish. How many did you get? They are best in larger groups, say 10+.
I got 10, but one of them was the weird blue one. I emailed pictures to aquariumfish.net (where I got them) earlier and asked them how they wanted to handle it...maybe I'll just tell them we'll call it square if they mail me 5 more. They are awfully nice to watch!
Well, after mulling it over, I think I'll just tell them I'll keep what I have. I love my Celestial Pearl Danio specimen tank, and someday I will have a specimen tank for some of these rummynose rasboras or the other rasboras. For now, though, I am really enjoying watching these tetras.
I had also purchased a small group (7) of Danio kyathit (they called them Fire Ring Danios, but I have read them called Orange Finned Danios). I really am enjoying these too! Maybe it's just because they're babies and don't know they're Danios, but they seem to be trying to swim alongside the rummynosed tetras. Oh well, at least they're getting along!
