Water is gritty?
New to the forms, but i have a few questions and don't know how easily they would be answered. I have had my ten gallon tank for a while now. I have never had any problems with it. About 3 weeks ago I went from gravel to sand, and i have gotten a new filter. Internal whisper 10 to 30, I love it. It is keeping everything nice and clean but my water just looks gritty, almost like the sand isn't settling. I let the tank cycle for two days before i put my fish back in it. I have a spear ten gallon that I use when I am doing maintenance I always keep up with my water changes. I have done God only knows how much research but I can't get rid of the grittiness. Any suggestions? Also my tank is 7 mollies and a rubber lipped pleco.
Your pump could be stirring the water causing a current, hence stirring up the sand. if it was a fresh tank with water and sand 2 days was not enough time for your tank to cycle, again it depends on if you washed the sand/ fineness of the sand etc
Dont know what size your pleco is, but if you give him a piece of wood and some stones he will not dig about so much, he could be mixing up the sand.
This is hard to diagnose without seeing the tank, but at least it gives you a few suggestions.

lift your filter inlet further away from the bottom of the sand, plus sand getting into the filter can damage the impeller on the pump, might be a good thing to give your filter a clean whilst you are at it.
Give the filter a clean using tank water so that you do not kill off the good bacteria that lives there.
Looks like your filter could be sucking a bit of sand up with the water, so moving the inlet away from the sand, or digging the sand away from the filter should stop it,,, the filter should have stopped the sand from re entering the tank, so check the pads for any gaps that the sand can bypass,
Hope this helps
Well since my post earlier and the few responses that I have added, I lifted my filter, I cleaned some of the sand and wiped down the walls of the tank did a partial water change and cleaned some of the ornaments. I am generously taking all advice into consideration and it is greatly appreciated. Since my maintenance this afternoon, everything is running smother. I cleaned out the filter there was no sand in it, but I did notice something very interesting, It's not grittiness that is in the water, it's air bubbles. Like I said I have the internal filter, with a bubble tube that sits right underneath it. Looking at my tank now it is air bubbles coming out of the water. I guess when I had the external filter on it the tubing from the filter set further in the corner of the tank making the bubbles less noticeable. I guess this is something I am just going to have to live with. Once the water settles a little bit more I will post some pictures of it :).... Thank you.
