Anacharis- cuttings

So after planting the Anacharis it took about a week and they seem to take off on a growing streak and would grow maybe 1-2 inches a day. They have finally stoped coming out of the sand and now have roots and also have root like things coming off thier middles too. So I read that if you cut them and plant them they will reproduce, however...I reached into the water with cutters and cut them in half and pulled the bottom two leaf sets and replanted. The tops of the plants where I cut are now black and seem to not grow anymore as well as the cuttings I placed into the sand the base turned blackish too. So what did I do wrong?

I cut a stem plant I just cut somewhere in the middle much as you did and then take the floating piece and plant it. I try too not uproot the stem itself during the process. The part that's black I would just cut and throw away then replant. They should take off again in a couple of days.
