Is my Dalmation Molly pregnant?
I bought a Molly fish at PetSmart today. The employee told me the fish is probably pregnant. Is this molly pregnant? If so, any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)
She definitely looks pregnant. So I guess the question then is: Do you want any babies? Do you have space for them?
-With my guppies, I usually let the females give birth in the main tank (It can be hard to know when exactly they are going to give birth, and the fry traps can be stressful)
-I catch all the fry I can find (the more plants and hiding places you have, the more babies can survive)
-I then place all the caught fry either in a breeding net, or into a separate fry only tank.
You can feed the babies special food for babies, such as Hikari first bites. I find it is much easier to simply finely crush up the food you give to the adults. I tend to give them a protein rich food once or twice a week. The extra protein can help them grow faster but isn't usually good for them all the time.
I do want to keep the baby fry. This is the first time I have had a fish like this so I have been trying to do some research.
I currently have a 20 gallon tank with 10 fish in there. Depending on the number of babies, I would get a bigger tank. :)
I was thinking of buying the breeder tank to keep her in there when the time gets closer.
Thank you for replying to my post!
no problem. I'd just like to point out that if you plan on buying a breeder trap to put the babies in, I would suggest a mesh sided one. I have both a mesh one and a hard sided. The hard sided they kept escaping from, so that one is now reserved for 1 or 2 of my bigger guppy fry. But the mesh one isn't very good for letting her give birth in. just a thought :)
My Molly fish was pregnant! :)
I bought the breeder tank and she ended up jumping out of it. I looked at her after midnight and she wasn't pregnant anymore. I looked in the rocks briefly and only found 1 baby. I safely put that one in the breeder tank.
Is it common for mollies to only have one baby? Could other babies still be hidden?
I don't think it's very common. If this was her first pregnancy it is possible that she only had one, but its much more likely that she had more and they all got eaten. And the babies definitely can hide well. just keep an eye out for another day or two.
