sump and water changes

Living in the country means that not only do I have nice untreated well water but I also have a sump pump for those spring thaws. The sump is about 15' from where the aquarium is going to be and puts the drop from tank level anywhere from to the floor to 3' lower. Would make for great suction on the siphon.

The concern I might have is putting this "live" water into a sump that may stay wet for months at a time normally but putting old water in there will keep it wet ALL the time. Would I be best to skip using it to for my old water in case there might be issues with that water doing something biologically in that environment? I could just put a shot of chlorine in every week but I hate to put any chemicals into any environment if it can be avoided... the chlorine might mess with the pump plastics too.

I've no problem carrying and dumping the water. This would have just been a convenient option.

Jeff.

I've lived in Wisconsin and we had a sump. I'd dump water in there all the time. I wouldn't worry about it at all unless you start smelling the sump! If you start smelling it, I'd then flush out the stagnant water with additional water, but I don't think you'll have this issue. There should be no significant issues regarding the old tank water in the sump, you'll normally have bacterial and organic stuff in the sump area anyway. Don't ever add bleach or corrosives (saltwater included) to the sump area, the bleach or salt can eat up the sump pump parts, depending on the design/materials of the sump pump.
