Help with stocking for my water..?
I'm about to set up a 42gallon aquarium and had planned on an Amazon themed (approximately anyway) planted tank - ideas including neons, rummynose tetra, bolivian/blue ram, farlowella cat, cory cats, fancy pleco etc..
My API test kit hasn't arrived yet but I went on my local waterboard website and it turns out I have 'moderately hard' water with a pH of 7.02.
Here's the report for those interested -
Hardness Level Moderately Hard
Hardness Clark 11.00 Degrees Clark
Hardness French 15.00 French Degrees
Hardness German 8.00 German Degrees
Aluminium 6.23 μgAl/l
Chlorine 0.19 mg/l
Coliform bacteria 0.00 no./100ml
Colour 1.58 mg/l Pt/Co
Conductivity 324.88 μS/cm at 20°C
E.coli bacteria 0.00 no./100ml
Fluoride 0.07 mgF/l
Iron 14.83 μgFe/l
Manganese 2.17 μgMn/l
Nitrate 17.69 mgNO3/l
Pesticides 0.0 μg/l
Copper 0.02 mgCu/l
Lead 2.01 μgPb/l
Nickel 3.66 μgNi/l
So, there goes my idea! Any ideas for what I can stock in my tank (I wanted a couple of shoals bright fish, plus maybe a centrepiece and bottom dwellers)? Or what I can do to make my water better for the softer water fish I originally wanted?
This is actually quite good for your soft water fish. Common terms like "hard" and "moderately hard" can mean different things to different people, and here is one example. I would class 8 dGH as at the high end of soft. I add Equilibrium to raise my GH up to 5 or 6 dGH, and I have all soft water fish, largely wild caught.
One caution on temperature though. The Blue Ram needs warmth, 82F minimum. Some of the other fish mentioned will be fine at this, some not. The corys will struggle and likely not last long, same for neon tetra. On the other hand, if you go with the Bolivian Ram, you can be down at "normal" community aquarium temperatures of 77-78F. My corys are spawning like mad in this temp, and they are with rummy nose tetra and other characins. And a Bolivian too.:-)
Have a look at the photos of my Amazon Riverscape and Flooded Amazon Forest tanks, click "Aquariums" tab below my name on the left.
Thank you Byron! I was a bit disheartened thinking I couldn't have the tank I'd imagined! I will go with Bolivian Rams in that case and keep the 77-78 temp :-D
