Adding more salt
My salt level is 1.019 and i want it to be 1.023. Would i have to take the water out and add more saltwater or what. I would think that when you take the water out it takes the salt out and therfore lowers the salt lvl?
your best bet, especially if there are inhabitants in the tank currently, is to raise the salinity gradually. My reccommendation is to use saltwater for top off (replacing evaporated water) until your desired levels. Since the salt does not dissepate via evaporation, the salinity will rise simply by replacing the evaporated water with saltwater. make sure to test the salinity each day, about an hour after your top-off. If this is a reef tank, I would aim slightly higher, for a reading of about 1.026.
there is nothing in the tank i am just cycling and i need to get the salt level higher
in that case, I would just add the salt about 1/2 cup at a time. Let it dissolve and retest. repeat as necessary. It may be faster if you dissolve the salt with tank water in a seperate container first, then add it to the tank.
I had this same dilemma and at first I tried adding salt directly to the tank (no creatures in the tank yet) but it would just sit at the bottom of my tank, so I tried mixing it in a seperate container and stirring the salt until it was fully dissolved and this worked very well. Be sure not to use a metal bowl as it will tarnish and destroy that bowl. Just use a small amount of water and a high amount of salt so that the new mix is highly concentrated[/u]
