30g Tank and adding salt
How often should I add salt to my 30g setup and in what kind of amounts?
And as far as I can tell, there are a lot of benefits to making sure your setup as a decent amount of aquarium salt in it, as it helps the slime coat and gill function, is that correct?
To answer you question improving the slime coat is what is claimed. If you are going to use it, follow the directions on the bag. Too much salt will be harmful. Another thing that you will need to consider is that some fish react negatively to salt (Plecos and Corys).
I am not a fan of using salt and I have not used salt in a non African Cichlids in ~25 years. IMO its not necessary.
I read all the claims too and gave it a try when I was new at fishkeeping. It spiked my pH, so I quit using it. Byron can explain it better, but freshwater fish live in an environment with no detectable amount of salt. Using salt short term for treatments is fine, but long term it makes their bodies work harder and can shroten lifespan. If you still want to give it a try, don't stock your tank wait any scaleless fish (like Corys) or Inverts because they will all be sensative to it. Also make sure the ones you do get are not sensative to salt and start out with a half dose to see how they react to it.
