shop bought rocks corroding NEED ADVICE.
 

i recently set up my 200ltr tank and it is still cycling , i put in it live plants and two cave shop bought ornament i have 6 giant danios to help cycle the tank and one rams-horn snail that came in with the plants, i have watched the snail double in size and i was happy for it to stay and clean the rocks etc, but i have notice today that this snail has eaten right into the top of one of the caves where it seems to do a lot of its eating and the ornament is actually corroding and a white chalk is starting to be seen and when you touch the rock it starts to fall off making the water pretty cloudy but it does clear up again, what should i do ? i like the snail in the tank and i also like the rocks , i would like to know if anyone else has had any similar problems with shop bought rocks corroding or snails eating into them, any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Sounds like that doesn't belong in an aquarium. I've never had that happen and I certainly wouldn't think a snail is causing the problem. I would remove it and replace it with true aquarium rock / ornaments. If you're at that shop on a regular basis, try to take it back and get something better in return (at no additional price due to your inconvenience). Good luck.

I concur. No artificial decor intended for an a quarium is going to come apart like this. A large cichlid or something might chew it, but not a ramshorn snail.

You are sure this decor was meant for an aquarium, and not for a reptile or other non-aquatic habitat?

situations like this, I think use your gut feeling and remove something like that, if you suspect it may be doing harm. that does not sound normal

to be honest i am not sure, as the person who sold me the caves in my opinion wasn't to clued up on the tropical fish scene, i am very much a novice at keeping a planted tank and these are the first rocks i have bought for many years as far as i was concerned these are the way the rocks are made now but i am going to remove the rocks now and take them back to pets at home tomorrow, can you please tell me will it be OK to put my old rocks from my old tank into the new tank there was quite a bit of ground in green algae on them but i got most of it off , thank you. -----------whatever these rocks are made of the snail hasnt stoped eating away at the same bit.

If the other rocks are real rock and were in a fish tank before, they will be fine. Algae on them is good too.:-)
