WHITE FUNGUS ON MY APONOGETON BULBS

I just got a pack of 6 hardy aponogeton bulbs and 2 lilly bulbs from wal mart, which told me to drop them in, so I did, and a day later half of them are growing this white fungus on them. Is it going to spread to the other bulbs? should I remove them or bury them or something? what do i do? I have a 10 gallon tank with normal aquarium gravel, a corner filter and a 25 W heater; is it something with the water?

I, too, purchased some of these plants at Wal-Mart. I bought two packs and only had one Apondogen not perc. I would pull the bulbs, squeeze them. If they are soft or mushy they are not viable. I also buried mine, being careful not to cover the crown of the bulb.

where is the crown on the bulb?

Tapered end(smaller end) up. The fatter end should be down.

what is the white stuff though?

It is fungus. Which tells me that the bulbs may be rotting. Fungus will attack any organic matter, living or dead. The bulbs may still be viable, so don't just pull them and throw them away. Check by squeezing them, if they are soft and mushy, throw them away.

how do you get rid of the fungus?

Fungicide.

I too recently purchased both Aponogeton and Dwarf Lily Bulbs from Wal-Mart. I had first placed the Aponogeton bulbs in and they were okay until I purchased Dwarf Lily Bulbs and placed one in the tank. Within maybe 2 or 3 days there was a white, round, fluffy-looking material attached to the Lily Bulb. The 2 Aponogeton bulbs I has placed in there had not sprouted at all. One of these two also began to develop the same white, fluffy-looking fungus. It is not as transparent or as much on this bulb either. The other Aponogeton Bulb never sprouted or grew this fungus. I have a Betta fish in the tank and have not seen him eat at this or anything. Sometimes he seems to hide behind the Lily Bulb and fungus facing away from these items. Please let me know if this is what it looked like on your bulbs.
