Cycling a 150 gal with plants.
If I wanted to cycle a 150 tank with plants, do I need fertilizers and how long would I cycle it for if? I would also add gravel and red stone from another tank.
If it is heavily planted, has gravel and stone from another tank, you should be good to go. You should check to make sure that you have the correct light bulbs for Plants. Usually the stores sell us new light fixtures but the bulbs are rated for Salt Water (ie Actinic is one of them). Consider also the depth of the tank if lighting needs to reach the bottom for low growing plants.
Do your water changes on day 1, then Fert on day 2 and 5, so 2 x a week.
I am also learning as I go.... I have high PH of 8.2 and very hard water. What is your PH? is your water soft or hard? I can't answer why these numbers are important but I know you will get asked for the numbers.
Plants will take up the Ammonia, they need this to grow.
Just only add one school at first (or half a school if doing large schools). Wait a week, add the second school. Wait a week, add the third school. etc etc.
They key is slow and steady, not all at once or even a lot at once. Slow and steady wins the race. Check your ammonia/nitrite levels often and make sure things don't get out of order.
Start the fertilizer (liquid comprehensive kind like Flourish) from the start (1 day after water changes).
I agree with what has been posted.:-)
Want to thank all for the good info.
