White things on tank not sure if they are harmful please help!
I am not sure where to post this so hopefully it is ok in here since these little buggers are in my Blood Red Parrot Cichlid tank.
I did a partial water change yesterday like I do every week and cleaned the gravel which I do every other week. Well I woke up a little bit ago and there are these little white things all over the glass in my tank with my BRP in it. I do see a baby snail that is about the size of a small q-tip top in my tank which I have no clue where it came from. But now all of these little white things are all over the glass and they are moving. They look like little lines. I did actually get pics thankfully I am a photographer and have a camera that could zoom enough to be able to see them clearly. So I will add pics with this. The pic is just a small area of them, they are all over the front of my tank.
I am just worried they are something bad. I have never in all of my years of fish keeping seen anything like this so I am confused and worried. I don't want these things to kill my BRP's if they are bad and if they are snails I don't want to be over run by those either because there has to be at least 200 of these things. Any help would be appreciated.
A little tank info:
I have no live plants
Temp between 78F-80F
2 BRP's (and the one small snail I saw in there)
Water parameters are within range no ammonia spikes or anything after partial change.
I do have hard water where I live so I always am checking and checked after I did the water change about 2 hours after to make sure things were ok. Don't remember specifics on the numbers b/c didn't think I was going to have an issue with the tank and need them and I have to go and buy a new kit just used the last of it last night when checking the water.
Thanks for any help or advice on how to get rid of them or what they are. I don't want a bunch of snails like I said so advice on how to try and get rid of them if that is what they look like would be very much appreciated as well. As promised here are some pics. :-)
Oh and in the pics to let you know I have black gravel with colorful specked pieces in it is not leftover food or anything like that. You can also kind of see them on the back of the tank as well but its blurry since I zoomed into the ones on the front. Thanks again. :)
Looks like Planeria, which are tiny white worms.
It's a sign that you need to do some aggressive gravel cleaning, and you may be over feeding your fish.
How often do you do water changes, do you use a gravel vacuum, and how much water do you remove?
I have had aquariums for years and take very cautious precautions and keep up on my partial changes and cleaning so if it's an issue of how clean my tank is I have no clue how to get it and my others any cleaner...lol.
How do I get rid of them and also if they are something that could hurt my BRP's??? :-)
Planeria is not harmful to fish, some fish will even eat them.
As far as I know, the way you get ride of them is keeping the tank clean and reduce feedings. Like snails, they only exist if there is food to support them.
I'm afraid I don't have any other advice, I've seen them before years ago but they went away after I did a few water changes. It has been too long ago for me to remember details.
I agree with the above,,starve your tank for a 2-3 days,,then half water change with gravel clean
and reduced feeds for a couple of weeks, maybe get a couple assasin snails or chain loaches in there to stop a snail infection from the one you have. Assasins breed very slowly but are brilliant bug cleaners. the loaches will eat it with gusto, 5 star meal to them.
