How to Care for Fish while on Vacation
I'll be gone for 8 days and I am concerned about the care of my fish. I have kind of a mixed bag tank (Bolivian Ram, Festivum, Rummy, Black Phantom Tetras, a couple of Mollies, BN Pelcos, & Zebra Loaches), so they all have different needs. (Just an FYI, I know this isn't a group made in heaven, but a temporary solution. My tank has turned into sort of a salvation tank).
I've heard those weekend slow release things are crap, & my loaches need their bloodworms. I use cichlid flakes and regular all purpose flakes, as well as the occasional spirulina bites.
I only have 1 person that I can count on to care for these fish, and she is an extremely busy person, so I don't want to have to ask her to come twice a day. I'm sure she will be less than thrilled having to deal with the bloodworms, as well. Although she is reliable, I want to keep it as simple as possible, so nothing gets missed.
Any advice? Are there any contraptions or solutions that I don't know about?
We raise Lake Malawi Haps and Peacocks and in our experience, fish do not have to eat every day unless they are fry/juvies. Female Africans hold fry in their mouth for 28-30 days and do not eat a bite of food. I know you are raising community fish, but still, I would think that if they eat every other day that would be fine. Better that than to have food laying around on the bottom and poor water quality within the 8 day period you are away. Every other day and they are sure to be hungry and eat up what is dropped in, they could probably go longer than that, but I am like you and worry if my fish don't get enough to eat.
Agree as well that every other day will be fine.
It would help as well if the fish can get some light in the tank as well, if at all possible can the lights be put on a timer?, this way they will not be sitting in total darkness.
Yes, I have the lights on a timer, so no problem there.
Feeding them very other day just makes me nervous, since I have a couple of pigs (the festivum & dalmation molly). They get fed twice a day (also the occasional snack) and the tank is spotless in an hour... they seem to dig grazing.
It won't cause them stress to have their food schedule change drastically, would it?
Were it me,, I would feed the fish as usual the day before I left, and then perform water change after they have eaten.
Would then leave enough for one feeding for person coming to feed, and have them come by around day four.
Fish can go up to a week or more with no harm.
I go on week long fishing trip's frquently during summer month's, and use the afore mentioned routine and have my brother feed the fishes as described.
I don't dare leave the food out where he could find it, lest he fall for the begging routine from fishes and dump in too much food.
