Banded gar weening off feeders
Hi ive had my what im almost positive is a banded gar for about 4 months id say and for the last 2 weeks ive been trying to feed him shrimp from the store because feeders can be bad for fish and could have diseases and i do not have a quarantine tank. He is about 3-3.5 inches. I cut the shrimp up into small enough pieces then soak them in entice scent and flavor enhancer for finicky eaters by seachem. I soak them for about 30 mins. I drop some in and the other fish eat him then i start trying to get him to eat it. The only way he even looks at it is if i have it in tweezers and have it movong around the top of the tank. Today was the first time i got him to bite it. He held if for about 5 seconds then let go. Ive also tried frozen bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp but he does not go after them either. Does anyone have any advice?
Gar's are natural fish eaters and I wouldn't really recommend trying to change his diet if he is eating ok and is healthy, but you can attempt to make him change.
I would personally try starving the tank for a couple of days, the gar has got used to eating live bait for 4 months and does not associate a non moving object as his usual feed, he is not hungry enough to eat something new so ignores it, if he still refuses just keep him on his live bait.
With live bait you dont need a quarantine tank, I used to keep 2 buckets, put enough bait into 1 bucket to feed your fish for about 10 days, keep it in there for about 10 days before using it, when you start using the first bucket buy 10 days of live bait into second bucket and keep rotating, in other wards you are quarantining your bait, anything untowards with the bait should show up, inspect your bait for flukes or spots etc before feeding, at least this way you have drastically reduced any nasties getting into your tank.
Let me know how you get on
You could put in shrimp live? Also try getting some live guppies (good source healthy) and breeding them so your gar can it the fry and you don't need to worry about health. What size tank is he in?
The fact is, when you take over a fish like that you control it's entire habitat. You shouldn't have gotten the fish if you couldn't get a quarantine system, theirs enough info on the web to know that you needed a quarantine system. Sorry to be so harsh but that's how it is.
