For those with wooden or homemade stands for 55+ aquariums
I finally found out what I want for xmas, a full hood for my 75 gallon. And my husband is terribly afraid that something would happen and not only the fish will be harmed but the water could possibly leak and damage our downstairs neighbors' items.
Anyone with personal experience willing to put my husband's nerves at rest?
can't. problems will happen. A lid will help to keep the fish in... but any aquarium can develop a leak, or a filter.
I had a rena filstar develop a leak in the inlet/outlet assembly
dumped about 3 gallons of water all over the floor before I got it.
agreed, no matter the tank its still a glass box full of water and failure can always happen. I do have a 55 gallon stand that my dad built about 12 years ago and it has been in use pretty much the entire time. Its on its 3rd 55 gallon tank tho as tanks do get old and braces begin to break ect. I've had a couple incidents of water spillage but like 2 cents said its often more equipment or user related then the actual tank.
I built my own stand for my 125g tank, but did not build a hood to go with it. While they make the tank look nicer, it makes digging around inside far more cumbersome. Most hoods are very light weight, made as only 1x1 or 1x2 box with a skin of thin oak plywood (or other hardwood).
The stand itself is a different matter... I made a journal of the basic frame, but didn't continue with the skinning in oak part. DIY 125 Gallon Aquarium Stand | Geo's Aquarium
As the others said ... it can happen to anyone. My 125g actually bursted on me, well cracked top to bottom and drained just 3 weeks after setting up. Certainly got lots of water in the basement. It made me doubt my stand big time, but I couldn't find a fault in it, it was still level, flat, and strong enough by math to support the weight. I've now had the replacement up for about 6 months with no issues. I'm inclined to believe it was a fault in the tank itself rather than the stand.
