Apple snail babies in a 2.5?
So, I've done it before, though I only had twelve babies, and nine survived. Their now four months old and are really healthy.
But now, two of my females have had egg sacks, tthe first hatched, and the second is now, and I already have 47 of the little guys!!!
And there's way more in the tank! [i only nab em when the come up on the glass, it's a lot easier that way.]
The tank is a 2.5, kept at 68-69 degrees, no heater, sponge filter, 50% water changes every other day.
Will this be okay for the babies? They are all tiny, about this size (.)
There are now 51 babies in the tank!
Anyone have advice?
Awww! Congratulations on your babies!!! :) I just love Apple Snails, and it's so nice to see you keeping them at the right temp, too!
As a general rule, the minimum tank size for one adult Apple Snail is 3 gallons. These are tiny guys, and things seem to be going well for now, but keep a close eye on it. Apples are super sensitive to nitrates, so when their bioload starts to kick the bacterial filtration into overdrive, the nitrate levels will rise accordingly. In such a small tank, a waterchange large enough to do any good in getting rid of waste will cause the nitrate level to flux quite dramatically, and the snails might have some issues with that!
I hope that helps somewhat??! What are you going to do with ALL those Apples?!! LOL! Such wonderful and fun little animals, aren't they? *luffs snails*
I just found out yesterday my Apple snail laid eggs!
I'm excited and nervous and want to do this right.
I'm not sure how many there are, I'm guessing about 50? I'll count them when I get home and take pictures C:
How long does it take for them to hatch?
And where should I keep them? I honestly don't mind if bailey[my clown loach] would like 1 or 2 for a snack but I'd like to keep a few and give away the rest or something.
I don't have any extra aquariums but what they are in now is a 22 cube. Only thing I have is a 1 gal pickle jar besides the aquarium.
Could I put the babies in a jar with a lide and some tiny holes and put the jar in the tank safely?
