Brown Algae HELP!!!
Ok so this tank has been up and running for about 3 months now and all of a sudden we have this horrible brown algea break out. I do water changes every weekend and I dont over feed my fish. I am using a Fluval FX5 for my filter. My lights are on only 6 hours a day. The water parameters are spot on. I am lost. Can someone help me please!
If this will easily rub off with your fingers, it is diatoms, not a true algae but we usually consider it as brown algae. If it does not, it is a different (true) algae. I can't tell from the photos, and the two are to me nearly identical.
I can explain further once we know which we are dealing with. Also, mention if you have live plants anywhere in this tank; the ones in the photo look like fake but I need to know if any live are present.
You can DIY a UAS scrubber to help you eliminate algae in DT. :)

No live plants and the brown algea wipes right off.
Understand that without live plants, there will always be nutrients present, and some form of algae will use these. Usually it will be a green or red algae, and the more intense and longer the light, the more this will occur. This is not at all a bad thing, as the algae uses the nutrients and produce oxygen, similar to having live plants, and this is good for the water quality and thus the fish. Those of us with live plants are keen to keep algae at bay because it will colonize plant leaves and slowly suffocate the leaf and the plant. But aside from this, it is not "bad" as some tend to think.
So if the light is increased to prevent diatoms, some other form of algae will undoubtedly appear. The green and red algae can be quite attractive, something that I would not say for diatoms.
