Driftwood Help
I was hoping someone would be able to answer a question? I have seversl pieces of driftwood that are from saltwater. How long would I need to soak them in freshwater, to leech the salt out of them. Would they then be safe for my freshwater aquarium. Basically is this possibale.

I would not use wood taken from salt water. The wood has soaked up that salty water and I don't know if it would ever release all of the salt. Depending upon the fish you have, and knowing what salt can do to soft water fish, I wouldn't risk it.

I was afraid of that. I have several nice looking pieces collected from the beech. Kept telling my self it would be ok. At the the same time assumed it would not. Thank you for the response Byron. Better safe that sorry.

I have been doing a lot of research on aquariums and i Happen to have a friend who's father is a mountain man trapper. And honestly He has a few freshwater aquariums with driftwood. and he told me to look for a stream that will have beavers. look for an old abandon beaver dam. because the wood will have been saturated with years of water flow and erosion. they make the best driftwood. But keep in mind also that you don't want to pull the wood from the dam it's self. but from the outer part of the damn. the parts that get the most water flow or sun baked. also make sure their is no fresh wood on or in the dam. Because you will have a angry beaver... but if there is absolutly no fresh cut wood then your safe from the beaver and you can find the best driftwood that suites your needs and most beavers will not chew on soft trees unless they are saplings. (fairly young) So do research but also that would help find good and unique pieces. also one more thing Never take from a dam that is occupied because of federal law. always make sure the dam is old
