mixing catfish and loaches?
okay so i have a 55 gallon with mbuna, and its been running for along time like 2 years, and i have 2 yoyo loaches and a synodontis decorus that have been there for the same amount of time, and i was wondering if your able to mix different kinds of synodontis species with my decorus? and same question for my loaches? i would just want to add like one or two petricola or nigriventis, and for the loaches i was wondering if a redtail loach or/and a skunk loach to accompany my other two loaches? the reason being for wanting the loaches and synodontis is, because they are great bottom feeders and get every bit of food, plus they have great personalities and they are really nice fish in general and are fun to watch.
could anyone give me advice? with aggresion issues, compatabilty issues, or any possibilities?
thanks for all help!
If you check the info in the respective fish profiles here, you will note that all the loaches are shoaling fish that should be in a group of their own. So before considering other species, you should increase the numbers of the present to make them happier--and thus healthier. Aside from this, it mentions in the skunk loach profile about the aggressiveness of this species, not suitable with other loaches.
While Synodontis decora [the "a" is the correct gender BTW] can stand up to rift lake cichlids, Synodontis nigriventris cannot. I would not mix Botia loaches with the cichlids myself, but it can sometimes work though they would be best with different fish. Check the profile, Botia almorhae. S. decora is best alone, as there is insufficient space for group of this species in this tank.
Have had catfish species(Petricola) come up missing eye's when kept with larger South American cichlid's, but have not kept them with African's.
If the Synodontis can handle the hard water African's enjoy, and tank is large enough to support a group,,plenty of hiding places for the catfish,,then maybe.
Once had Brichardi colony that nearly killed four of five Full grown Synodontis Multipunctatus.
