I have a 25 gallon tank..my fish have ick. I'm treating the tank with Jungle's Ick Guard. It says to remove the carbon..does that mean remove the filter completely during the treatment process? The filter that I have is a whisper filter all in one type of filter.
Please let me know as soon as possible. I have already lost my red tail shark. Hopefully, that's the only one I will lose.
If the cartridges are more than two week's old,,then you won't need to replace them for the carbon is only active for maybe two week's.
Would not feed the fish during medication and would keep an eye on ammonia, nitrites.(perform water change if they rise above .25ppm
Would place new cartridges in filter after treatment is over.
Would follow direction's on med's.(more is often not better).
As 1077 points out, activated carbon will adsorb medications making them less than effective. With a cartridge type filter, I would use a single edge razor blade, xacto or utility knife and slice one side of the cartridge enough to remove the carbon.
This will allow you to continue to have excellent mechanical filtration without any carbon in play.
Hope this helps. Good luck getting rid of the ick.
My fish had ick a few days ago, and all I did was turn up the heater a bout 5 degrees. (don't have a thermometer yet.. ~sigh~) and I slowly added aquarium salt into the tank. (I added small amounts when I did a water change, which I did about 10% at least every other day.). So far all the fish seem healthy and I can't see any more ick on any of the fish, but continue to treat. I'm not sure if I just got lucky, or if it went away faster because I caught it so quickly.
