Can't keep water Temp. Down?
I've noticed for the last while that my water temp in my 25 gallon has been creeping up and I don't know why? It's up to 26 C, and I have the heater down to 18C. I've looked over the heater and it appears to be working properly. For the longest time I had the water temp stable at around 23 C, and that's where I'd like to have it now. Any ideas?
Aside from the heater, which I will come back to, what is the room temperature? The tank will obviously be as warm as the room. And is there any direct sun on the tank? It is amazing how fast this will heat the water, even in winter. Or a heating vent in the room under the tank?
To ythe heater, they can overheat regardless of the setting. I had one that did this overnight and I didn't spot it for a day, by which time it was so warm the fish began dying. Can you tell if the heater is actually on--is it warm/hot to the touch? Be careful, it can burn you and even shock you if the case is not water-tight.
The room Temp stay's around 24 C, This apt. block we live in is always warm:-?! And we don't have heat vents, we have heat elements along the bottom of the wall on one side of the apt. And the heat isn't on, heck we don't turn the heat on unless it's -34 C outside(your lucky you live in BC,Manitoba winters suck):-(. That's how warm it stays in our apt. and it's along a wall that get's no sun? And the heater is a pretty good one, a light comes on when it's heating. And I checked, and the heater is cool, so I'am starting to think it's the air temp in the apt. But my 2 10 gallon tanks are at 23 C ??
I had a 25 gallon Marineland aquarium with the Marineland hood. The hood had twin lights encased by one piece of clear lexan. The tank was always warm when the lights were on. It would increase the temp by sometimes 5 degrees Fahrenheit. I use an Exergen infrared thermometer to check my aquarium temps, and it goes to 107.5 degrees, after that it just says HI on the readout. It always said HI when I tried to read the temp on the lexan cover, and 104.4 on the side of the cover. I don't know if this is something to look at but it could be.
I forgot the tank light issue, sorry. Thanks Freshcatch for mentioning this. I've not noticed much of an impact with the modern CFL bulbs and newer T8 fluorescents, both of which produce less heat as they are more energy efficient, but it is one contributor. And the smaller the tank volume, the more affect light will have.
Grab a couple cpu fans and attach them to the top of the tank, blowing across the water surface, this will cool the water.
