Beta with mirror
Hi! I'm new to being a fish owner. I recently bought a 6 gal tank complete with filter, biowheel, and a light (I'm a college student.. it's the biggest I could afford to keep in my dorm.) I've spent the past few weeks cycling even though it was hard to wait. Yesterday I bought my first fish, a male beta. The aquarium is currently sitting on top of my dresser which has a big mirror behind it. I've had a beta before so I know they react to the mirror because they think it's another male. I've seen my new guy flare his gills only a few times, but I'm wondering if the mirror behind it will exhaust him or keep him overly aggressive. I don't have decorations yet, but I'm planning on getting a few fake plants and something with bubbles to put at the back. Will that help or should I get a picture background so he doesn't see the mirror all the time?

Flaring stresses them out. If he is flaring more than 3-4 times day and acting aggresive toward the mirror image then you need to block the back of the tank so he doesn't do it anymore.
In my experience and from others I have heard from, most of the time their bettas are fine and happy, healthy fish until they have to show aggression and try to establish a territory. Once that starts to happen they often et bloated, sulk and don't fair so well.

I agree, even if he's not being tired out by displaying at the mirror, he's developing aggression which will cause behavioral problems, especially if you intend on adding other fish to your tank. You can get nice backgrounds at the fish store, both aquatic scenes and plain colours, which you can attach to the back of your tank.

Low dough background=thin colored plasic notebook covers.

Ooh, are you talking about the sticky kind? I loved those on my textbooks when I was little. They peel right off the book at the end of the year without hurting it. Cool, I like that! Plus, only like $3 at Staples. And easy to change if you feel like a different colour :P

That is a sweet idea herefishy. I like a good solid background color but I wanted something that was translucent.
Also for your betta, giving them something alive that moves aorund that they can hunt down and eat seems to make them all the happier.
