Where is the good bacteria?
 
Where is the good bacteria that everyone talks about? Is it loose in the substrate or, is it actually growing on each little piece of gravel?

I'm wanting to use a siphon hose to draw out some gravel that has gotten down in the extra holes in my UGF. But I'm wondering... If I do that will I be removing the good bacteria from under the UGF?

The good bacteria is everywhere in your tank and filter! Cleaning one part of your tank won't do any harm, the bacteria in the other parts of your tank will quickly reproduce in the area you cleaned.
