55g and 10g set up questions
In a couple weeks I will be getting a 55 gallon aquarium. I plan to cycle it with 6 zebra danios and maybe 5 long-fin black skirt tetras. Once it is cycled I will add 1 bristlenose pleco, 2 pearl gouramis, and 3-4 ghost shrimp.
Will it be okay to cycle the tank with both the zebra danios and the black skirt tetras?
Also, I am going to get a 10 gallon soon too. I am thinking of stocking it with 4-5 serpae tetras, an otocinclus, and a snail. Or, some black mollies (all one gender so they dont breed) instead of the tetras.
Can the 10 gallon sit on the carpeted floor, or does it need to be on a table/stand?
I'd really recommend doing a fishless cycle. It's so much less cruel to the fish and can be just as fast! There's lot's of good information spread around this site on how to do it.
Yeah you really shouldn't be throwing 11 fish into a brand new tank. Chances are you'll lose at least half of them. Throwing 11 fish into a tank you've already fishless cycled is probably even a bad idea.
I realize it's lame to fishless cycle because you have an empty tank churning water for 3 weeks, but it's still a better alternative to flushing 6 cute little fish down the toilet.
Oh, and good choice on the pearl gouramis! I have 2 and they are beautiful to watch. I think they've gotten even more colorful since I've started giving them a bloodworm treat once or twice a week to supplement the flakes.
I realize it may seem cruel to cycle a tank with fish in it. But, I have read a lot about people using zebra danios to cycle because they are so hardy. Also, I suggested black skirt tetras because I have had luck in using them to cycle my smaller tanks. But it could just be that - luck. Thinking twice about it now, I would not use the black skirts in the cycling process for the 55. Only the danios. But, it may also be good to try out the fishless cycle.
So now to decide between only the danios or a fishless cycle. Thanks for the input!
