5 year old added fish to tank - can anyone ID this fish?
My 5 year old went to Lady Bird Lake (aka Town Lake) here in Austin TX, captured 2 of these fish and promptly dropped them into our freshwater tank. They have survived the last week with 3 corydora cats and 3 Rasbora Heteromorphas. Can anyone ID this fish?
Mosquitofish, maybe Gambusia affinis
Yep. Those are mosquito fish Gambusia spp. Great pictures you have of them, tho. I think those two are young females. The care for them is much like guppies, but they can get a little nippy.
The anecdote is humorous, but perhaps you should try to teach the youngster (gently) that it is not a good idea to do this.
Had the fish been texas cichlid fry, you would soon have a few less rasboras to worry about.
If the wild fish have any diseases or parasites, their hasty addition to your tank could have dire consequences.
Forgive me: I don't want to be DEBBIE DOWNER! (WAA WUUH!) I think it is great that you are sharing this hobby with your child. And I think it is wonderful that the child has an interest and passion already for living creatures. It's just one of those teachable moments that come up every so often.
Best of luck!
