First Glass Catfish
Hey guys, I want to set up a tank for some glass catfish. I have a 5g tank available. Any advice on what plants, filters, and general care I should have for these guys? I'm very intrigued by these see through creatures. THANKS!
A 5g will be much too small for this fish unfortunately, if you click on the shaded name it'll take you to the profile for the glass catfish and it will provide you with a lot of information.
Good luck, I also like these a lot!
Ok my fiancée found a 35g tank on Craigslist with the stand, filter, and a couple other accesories for $35. We're thinking of making this one the glass catfish tank now. Any recommendations on the plants per se? I saw the profile but I didn't see anything specific. Are they particularly picky about the plants? How about tank mates? Are they compatible with other fish? I'll appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!
Fish aren't picky about plants. Floating plants like water sprite and duckweed are always appreciated.
Tankmates should be peaceful, I think some harlequin rasbora, or lambchop rasbora would be nice for some colour to the tank. :-)
Glass Catfish are very good schoolers and they are very fast swimmers too. That's why they require a minimum of a 36 inch long tank to truly "spread their fins." They should also be kept in a minumum group of 6 to 8, preferrably more like 12. Good tankmates would be Cherry Barbs, Rasboras, and some of the smaller more docile Gouramis like the Dwarf & Honey varieties. They should also be kept in a planted tank and Wisteria is a cheap plant that grows well in low tech tanks. So do Java Ferns & many types of Crypts.
Chances are you'll be very impressed with how they school together. 8-)
Oh, another good tankmate would be Kuhli Loaches which also need to be kept in a group of six or more.
