Incandescent lighting question
Hey everyone, I was thinking about starting a small 10 or 20 gallon aqaurium to keep upstairs as my mom likes looking at mine. I would like it to have live plants in it. My question is to get the proper watt to gallon ratio I was looking at both the all glass flourescent and incandescent hoods at drsfosterandsmith.com. and it looks like the incadescent would provide the right wattage, but then I thought maybe the incandescent lights dont provide the proper spectrum? they have both white light bulbs and a blue light bulb that I hadnt heard of. So basically my question is, Is incandescent all right for growing plants, or just lighting an aqaurium?
P.S. Any suggesetions on plants for such a small tank would be appreciated :-P[/i]
If I were you I'd go with fluorescent lighting. On smaller tanks they tend to make the temperature fluctuate. I have a five gallon that came with incandescent that would make the water warmer during the day and evening, but when I turned it off at night the temp would drop a good four-six degrees. I don't know if it would have such a big impact on a 10 gallon, but that's my two cents.
But plants do fine in incandescent, I've noticed.
My hood had the screw in incandescent bulbs and I agree it did make the temp fluctuate. I replaced them with 2 10 watt fluorescent bulbs that I found at walmart for about 5 dollars each.
Screw in compact fluorescents are always an option. For the 10 gallon I would get 15 watt bulbs and for the 20 gallon you could use 25 watt bulbs. Just make sure that you get the ones that are 6500K.
Regular flourescent bubls are the best though as they provide more useable light and have less restrike so more light actuallt get to the tank.
Anubias, crypts, moss, Anacharis/elodea, Small vals, Primrose, and manyothers will work well ineither tank. The 20 gallon will have more room to aquascape so I would recommend the 20 as well as the fact it will be easier to maintain water quality than a 10 gallon will be.
Thanks guys. I think i'm going to get the screw in lamp hood. Thanks Fish-4-all for the suggestions.
LEt us kow how well they work. Very few use them right now so more personal experiences would be nice to have.
