I'm rather new to keeping a tank, but I've heard RCS are great, colorful little shrimp. I'm wondering, since RCS eat algae, would that negate the need for an algae eating snail? I have a 3.5 gallon tank with one betta.

Most probably your RCS would become tasty snack for your betta. :-)

lol Well I've heard that can be an issue, but many betta owners still do it with lots of hiding places for the shrimp... You think it likely I couldn't make enough hiding places for shrimp in a 3.5 gal?

Not impossible at all but 3.5 is like a very small prison. If you have a fish that doesnt hunt for shrimp, you would be fine. Betta being an aggressive fish will defenitely go for it. Also, RCS will go into hide mode all the time which will rob you the pleasure of seeing them out and playing. The very purpose of having RCS will be defeated. It is not impossible but in my humble opinion, not worth the risk.

That is a very good point. Thank you so much!! Not something I had considered before. Thank you for your opinion. What with having no experience of my own, any opinions are helpful to me. :-D Especially ones that make a whole lot of sense.

:-)

And to your original question, RCS are cool for a fish tank as they have negligible bioload. They are very much fun to watch and you can quickly build up a good community in a short time.

However, if you already have a betta in there, you would do well with a Nerite snail for algae.
