So I have my new tank (with Aqueon QuietFlow 20), in the process of cycling. I have my 3 zebra danios who seem to be ok, etc Life is good.
Now, when do I change my filter? How does changing a filter effect cycling? I mean I thought some of the bacteria for the biological filter live in the water filter, wouldnt changing the filter mess everything up?
Hi there! :-)
Why are you changing your filter? Do you mean just the cartridges? What sort of media is in your filter right now?
From what I have gotten from everything I have read is DON'T change it! Leave it alone unless it is falling apart. It is your main source of beneficial bacteria. That is what I am doing with my fairly new tank and it has been working. Makes sense to me. Advise has been rinse it off in the tank water and put it back in when you do water changes.
If you have carbon in your filter, you might want to think about getting it out. You don't need it anyway. It may leech things from the water that are necessary for the fish? There are a lot of things in the water that I assume fish need. So even though millions of people are using carbon, just to be on the safe side, you can take it out without any bad effects to your tank.
And, with three zebras, you don't have to change the filter for a long time.

I agree with what other members have posted. Rinse the filter media as needed--depending upon how dirty it gets, this can be every week during the partial water change, or every other week, or once a month, etc. You want the water to be able to flow through the media which means it can't be allowed to clog up. Rinse the media in a pail of tank water siphoned out at the water change, as tap water with chlorine/chloramine will kill the bacteria that have colonized the media.
