Sump pumps, aquarium pumps, impact on fish, advice
I was changing the water, then refilling using tap water conditioner added to the tank before the water went in. I felt I wasted too much water trying to adjust (and keep adjusted) the temp from the hose.
I have a 55 gallon Rubbermaid brute to store the water in (complete w/300 watt heater & circulation pump on a timer).
What I would like to know is if a clean (new) sump pump would work in pumping the water out to the tanks? I have a 1/6 HP sump pump at home that has only been used on clean water a couple of times. I used it with a sanitizer and rinsed the pump out each time. (only twice).
smaller sump pump? the aquarium pumps do not seem to be able to pump the water 20 feet or so. at least the one I have seems to be breaking down.
I use a Sears 1/6 HP sump pump for mixing and moving water while I'm out doing tank maintenance on customer's tanks, and I've never had an issue with it causing problems with the fish. In addition, it's plenty powerful. I'd just fill up a bucket and run water through it for a few minutes to give it a good cleaning before you use it for the first time.
thanks... ..the pump I have is 1/6 hp.. so I think it will work too.
do you shut the pump off when you are done filling ? or if you are moving from tank to tank can you briefly use a hose valve to shut the flow off ? (without damaging the pump)?
notice you are in new hampshire. I love that state. if I didn't hate shoveling snow I'd love to move back..
I'd shut the pump off. While stopping the flow with a valve for a short period of time shouldn't hurt the pump, a 1/6 HP pump puts a lot of pressure on the hose. I just unplug the pump and make sure it doesn't start a backsiphon from the tank.
New Hampshire is awesome, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.
