Just a pleco question
Hey everyone, I look after my boss' 55 gallon aquarium. He has a levianthan of a pleco, easily 14 inches long, and I was just wondering if it would be at all aggresive to other fish I introduce. My boss wants me to get him more fish, as he only has the pleco and a 4 inch molly (I never believed that got that big till I saw it :-P). I was thinking about some silver dollars? Maybe some corys but I am worried about the tempermant of the pleco. Thank you!
Well for beginners, that is a big plecostomus, and yes he will probobly get a little bigger. He is already too big for that aquarium. You may be ableto trade him in for credit to re-inhabit the tank. At 14" he probably is having a hard time even turning around in the tank as 55g tanks are only 12" deep, front to back.
Silver dollars and mollies do not share the same water requirements. Silver dollars prefer a softer, more acidic water habitat. While Mollies tend to like harder more alkaline water, even a little aquarium salt can be added. Plecostomus' don't care for the salt either. Sit down with your boss and discuss what he is looking for in his tank. Explain to him the situation with the plecostomus.
To answer the original question, will plecostomus bother other fish? Plecostomus' can be territorial. Most often they are not except with their own kind. They are basically bottom dwellers and tend to leave evryone else alone.
