saved a fish
hi need to know name of fish friend was going to "flush him". would like to list locally to re home it thankshttp://www.fishforum.com/userpix/4188_IMG_1020_1.jpg
This is a central american cichlid, I will do some checking and get back to you with a specific species name. It looks like possibly a black belt cichlid, but I want to check a few others first to be sure.
Either way, I can tell you it is going to get quite large, prefer softer water (7.0 - 7.5 is ideal), and need warm temps (78-82 degrees).
Foods like hikari cichlid pellets, frozen formula 1 food, worms, etc. will be needed.
How large of a tank are you keeping it in? What other fish are in the tank with it? This is going to be a somewhat aggressive fish, and very territorial, so lots of decorations are a good idea.
I'll be back when I have a specific name for you.
Ok, that was a right name for you.. black belt cichlid, Cichlasoma maculicauda. Here's a good picture of an adult fish:
Yours appears to still have some of the juvenile coloration. They get about 10 - 12 inches long, and are more aggressive than an oscar, less agressive than a red devil. Good tank mates would be things like jack dempsey, severum, green terrors, anything that is equal in aggression and size to defend itself. For the one fish alone you will need a minimum of about 90 gallons, and when healthy, they grow very fast. The black belt cichlids will also eat quite a bit of vegetable/plant matter if its available, which is uncommon for most central american cichlids. The food list I gave you prior to this post will still apply, as will all other params for its care. If you mix it with anthing else, make sure it's in a very large tank (125 or more) because they are very territorial, and at their adult size will need quite a bit of space. Lots of rock and driftwood will help.
thanks for the help i will post him today with that info, i dont have near enough room for a fish that size just a waste to let someone who doesn't care let a fish die.
