Hi all, has anyone had success with Tetra SafeStart for a new tank cycle?
I believe that Tetra'ss Safestart, Seachem's Stability and API's Quickstart are all contenders in the 'bacteria in a bottle. Dr. Tim's One and Only is another good product.
HOWEVER, although all of these bacteria seeds give you some advantage, it still takes time to develop sufficient bacteria colonies in your tank. Patience must rule when it comes to cycling a new tank.
Agree. True 100% bacteria supplements will establish the nitrifying bacteria faster, but this must still take place.
Tetra's SafeStart is the formula originally discovered by Dr. Hovanec and sold to Tetra. His later product, which he alone sells under the name Dr. Tim's One and Only, is said to be even more effective. I have not tried it.
I have used Stability made by Seachem, it too is 100% bacteria though not the same formula as the others mentioned. I had no ammonia or nitrite in a new tank with fish. I did have live plants though, and this may well have been the greater factor [I now always use live plants and never bother with the supplements]. But I do know from those who have used these on their own that no fish losses occurred in new tanks. Obviously, fish stocking was be very minimal and gradually increased or the bacteria will easily be overwhelmed.
Using one of these bacterial supplements is no different from seeding the new tank with nitrifying bacteria.
Thank you both for your replies to my question, I really appreciate it.
