new to saltwater

hello,

I am just beginning with a 20 gallon saltwater tank to get used to how it all works. Got a couple of quick questions though.

I have Crushed coral in the tank at the moment. Can I or do I put live sand on top of the crushed coral? Or is it better to use either one or the other instead of both?

Thanks in advance,

p.s. I am putting the 20 gallon together so I can have it as my quarantine tank, when I get my 150 gallon tank eventually setup. Once I start that process I will have a lot more questions if you don't mind.

You can mix em together, but its best to chose just one or the other. If using Crushed Coral, best ot use +0 XFine

i wouldnt use either in my quarantine tank, infact i wouldnt use live rock that i was later going to use in a display in my QT. you want to be able to siphon out the bottom junk in the tank often and you dont want to provide a medium for disease to multiply. i keep QTs bare bottom with a few pieces of PVC pipe and maybe a single sacrificed ( never to be used elsewhere ) piece of live rock.

if i had to choose one personally for a display tank, i would go with sand as i find debris gets trapped in the cracks of the crushed coral.
