A combination of Matrix Carbon and PhosGuard - whether you need it depends. If you have a heavily planted tank, perhaps not. Otherwise, periodic use of such products can be beneficial.
Lots of folks don't appreciate activated carbon, even though it's used to purify drinking water. It adsorbs all sorts of impurities and can produce purer water in some circumstances.
As mentioned, in a heavily planted tank, with substantial weekly water changes, not so necessary.
