Marineland Siphon Kleen?
Does anyone use one of these? Do you like them? I can't afford a fancy siphon, so was wondering if this does a good job. For a 55 gallon, do I need an extra large? Thanks!
I have a very similar product, it is fine for manual water changes using this and a bucket. Years ago I had a 55g and used the manual on that; took a while to get 6 pails of water out and in, but it is workable. I have 7 tanks and some larger ones now, so I use the "puthon" that attaches directly to a threaded faucet which is much easier.
Thank you, Byron. I wonder if it would be faster for me to just keep doing what I'm doing--scooping out a gallon at a time. More trips back and forth to the bathroom, but if it takes a while for the siphon to fill a bucket , the water would be getting cool in the meantime. I'd like to get a Phyton, but boy are those things expensive! Thanks.
You use the device to drain the tank into pails, and you empty the pail when it is near full [use a 2 or 3 gallon pail, anything larger will be heavy], then siphon out another, etc, until half the tank is drained out. The substrate can be vacuumed during this, unless there are live plants. Fresh water can be siphoned in if you can place the pail just above the tank frame (to create a siphon) or poured in carefully. The conditioner is added to the pail of water before it enters the tank. Any variation in temp during this is insignificant.
I use a gallon pitcher to scoop out a gallon of water at a time, empty it in the sink, and come back for another. If I get a siphon, I will have to just pour the fresh water in slowly, as I can't get a bucket above the tank frame. Even though, this would still save me loads of trips to the bathroom. I'd be taking 2-3 gallons to pour down the drain at a time instead of one gallon at a time. Sorry I wasn't very clear.
