Plants dying off! Another fertilizer question!
Ok, most people who read my 'nagging' threads will know that I use Flourish Comprehensive and Excel, along with tetra crytpo root tabs, all my plants are growing and most are more green than they have ever been, along with my Red Tiger Lotus, which is a lovely shade of red. I have 1.2wpg over a 12UK gallon fish tank. However, I have noticed pin holes and yellowing on some of my anubia leaves and wendtii, and my java fern, as always has turned a lovely shade of brown. :'( I was wondering, what other fertilizer should I add? Would potassium work, or should I just add trace elements, since the leaves are turning yellow? Also, I have noticed my roots on my Cryptocoryne Tropica, keeping turning translucent and rotting away.
Hello. Take it from me, I am not a plant expert; though, alot of these fluctuations of plants dying and some not is because of all the different elements and nutrients you are adding. Meaning when one or another element that the plant needs is not as great anymore. It really damages the plants down to the roots. Its best if you want your plants to keep on the growth spurt and not on steroids is leaving the tank with no added nutrients. Perhaps just very nutritious substrate and mainly the only nutrient that the plants get from the water itself is the fish waste. This in my experience with my plants keeps them from growing like crazy to dying the next day.
Though I think potassium helps to produce greener leaves (more chlorophyll) in the leaves and stems. It might work, just that when you run out of an element you will see major difference in the plants growth when it did still have that element availability food.
About your root problem. Do you have it in substrate? How would you tell that it is being translucent if the roots are in the ground? or did you pull it out to see?
I believe that most plants roots start to rot because of no aeration in the aquarium. If the aquarium is not properly aerated then the plant's root will rot. Poor water aeration. If you have an air pump on already maybe you should perhaps try to increase the flow or try to make the flow of the water flush onto the crypt(s). Like air in you face.
Can you post photos of the problems?
