New 60 gallon tank
I've got an old aquarium originally set up for salt water, that I wanted to give my son. He wants to set it up for freshwater plants and fish, perhaps discus or angels.
The lighting system consists of:
4 - CFL 9 watt 5000 k lamps
4 - CFL 9 watt Blue lamps
2 - CFL 39 watt 4100 k lamps
We've got a lot of work to do, but is this spectrum good for this new tank or should we be looking for different bulbs. Not really interested in going with T5 or T12, LED etc. as we're trying to keep our costs down and we'd like to use the equipment we have for now if possible. Any suggestions?
Hmmm. Well I think 6500K is what you want for live plants.
And if you go to any hardware store they'll have florescents for cheap. I can get a 6500K 24" T8 tube at Lowe's for under $10. You don't HAVE to buy those fancy pet store light bulbs. :-)
1.How big is the tank?
2.How many Discus/Angels are you getting?
4. What local water parims?
To be honest I would be careful if it's your sons first tank about giving him a tank with discus. They aren't cheap fish and are very fragile so you need to be careful about keeping them health. Good luck!
The lighting is not going to work with a tropical planted tank. you are going to want to use a 67k bulb and a color max of some sort. I use the following fixture with a 67k bulb and a color max bulb, both t5
I've ordered 2 36 watt 6500k lamps, along with 4 13 watt 6500k lamps, and 4 9 watt blues. I remeasured the display area and its really only 50 gallons, with a built in sump behind the display, so if I understand it all, I'm exceeding the 3 watts/gallon rule. I would think I'd be ok?
