2.5 Gal QT

Hi, I am adding some cardinals (5 or 6) to my 25 gal tank. I would like to QT them (1-2 wks) before addition. I have never used QT before. All I have is 2.5 gal hex tank, which I have been using as hospital tank before. It was OK in those cases as I used it treat 1 sick fish. Now how to QT a group of cardinals? I know bigger is better, but I don't have one now. Please advise as to now I can accomplish this with this small tank. I will be very diligent with daily water changes etc. Also, can I get away with 1 week or ~10 day QT. I know a small tank QT can be risky in itself, esp for large or group of small fish as in this case. Please help. Thanks so much.

I think you might do more harm than good with that small of a tank. It would be uncycled, with a massive bioload for that volume.

That's what I 'm worried about. So what can I do? I don't want to risk my other fish by adding the new ones immediately... Thanks..

Hi, my first thought is to buy them [if you don ' t have them yet] by pairs, one pair at a time. This will deal with one of your problems: the large bioload But, the other problem is: since the small tank isn' t cycled, cardinals will be subjected to great stress as Geomancer has already told you. Cardinals are very delicate fish that require very stable aquarium parameters. Is there any chance that you can substitute cardinals by their more hardy cousins NEONS?

I have some cardinals (3) already in my tank and doing well. Also, I never had good luck with neons before. Admittedly, I had a 10 gal tank then....
