Male swordtail problems
my male swordtail has been bothering my new females there is two female swordtails and 1 female mickey mouse platy, i know that males harass females but he has taken a chunk from one of the swordtails tail. i also have another male swordtail but doesnt seem to be bothering anyone. any advice i am going to get more females and add some from the fry that i have when they are old enough

how big is your tank? make sure there are places where the females can hide. adding more females is a good idea that way the male will chase them all just a little instead of 1 a lot.

Add hiding spots, like crazy said. How big is the tank at the moment?

I suggest buying a few more females. The best ration for male to female swords are 1 to 3.

This might sound silly but are you 100% sure that your females are females? I had 2 males and that exactly how they acting until the smaller one died. Female swords don't normally have the long tails that males do. They look almost exactly like platies.

hehe yea holly im sure they are females, its a 29gallon and there is a large fake rock thing that some of the females tend to hide in i will be getting more females next week as they are getting in more stock

your tank sounds like it is big enough but i think you should get more hiding places.

Get rid of one of your male swordtails i've read that 2 shouldn't be in the same tank.

i think having 2 males is fine if they dont bother eachother. do yours get along?

tsalling 01-06-2008 05:35 PM

Having two male swordtails is fine as long as there are enough females.

I had 3 in the tank at one time and had no problems but we all know who was the head of the tank!
