you can breed crowntails with veiltails ("normal" betta) as far as i know. you could also purchase a female crowntail for breeding as well.

I think there are female crowntails; I don't know why there wouldn't be.

That would be very hard to do. Breeding bettas is one of the harder tasks of fish keeping, and I would not suggest doing it.

The male betta can kill the female if he wants to breed and she doesnt, so you would need a good amount of females for one male. I would get a pretty large tank too so the females can hide from the male as much as they can/need.

The other bad thing is that is the female does actually get gravid (unlikely), then when the fry get older you would have to take out all the males and put them in their own tanks.

It is a lot of work if you ask me.

so i have to let the males out and let the females take care of the frys???
do algae eaters eat the eggs or the frys?

Kevin,
I can understand your misunderstanding of the post. After bettas breed the female comes out of the tank right away. The male will look after the eggs and very young fry. After the fry start to be able to take care of themselves, the male also needs to come out. So far this means 2 tanks plus the one the babies are in.
As the fry start to develop and mature, the male babies will not tolerate each other and each one will need his own container. For commercial breeders that are set up for it, these will be small containers that basically get fresh water every day or two. The females can be left togethe until they are old enough to be sold off if there is enough room in the tank for all of them. Bettas can produce as many as 150 fry from a single breeding but most people do not successfully raise nearly that many.
