What does the Latin Fundulopanchax mean?
do you mean this? West African Killifish: Fundulopanchax Gardneri
Yes, what does the Latin mean besides "bottom"?
I cant say 100% but may be a bottom feeder?
This genus/species has had some name changes. Meyers (1924) initially erected the genus name Fundulopanchax as a subgenus of Fundulus, and later some biologists considered it a synonym for Aphyosemion until Parenti (1981) established it as a distinct genus. The etymology is a bit confused; "panchax" may have been derived from the name for a minnow. "Fundulo" derives from the Latin fundus meaning "bottom" so the fish in this genus are literally "bottom panchax."
Now my Wife will ask me what panchax means. :-)
I hope she's at home now awaiting the arrival of some of the above fish eggs.
There are no species in "Panchax" today, but the name is a species epithet for Aplocheilus panchax which was initially named Panchax panchax. Some sources mention "panchax" as being of unknown origin.
Thank you again, Byron.
