Photo is not posted. I'd suggest separating your fish. What size is the tank?

it is a 55 gallon tank it almost looks like they are kissing but they are tearing each other apart

I know they're different kinds of cichlids, but the only way I could keep my convicts from killing each other was to have at least least 4 in the tank, or just 1. Having 4 splits up the aggression. The convicts fight in the same way, for whatever that's worth.

I kept my males and females in separate tanks, but my understanding is that breeding pairs will kill pretty much anything else in the tank with them.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cichlids. Jack Dempseys and Green Terrors are two of the more aggressive territorial cichlids there are. Jack Demsey was a famous boxer in the 1930's and 1940's. And there is a reason they call a Green Terror a Green Terror. Does all of this make sense. These two are not, except under very rare circumstances, compatible in the same tank.
