My 45 Gal Tank Log. =]
Here is my 45 gallon!
Its got a mirror back, which im not too happy about, but am going to try to cover it up.
Its currently cycling, fish-in, with one Rosy Red Minnow, and a few pond snails. My apple snails should be going in soon as well.
I currently have fish in QT, waiting for the tank to be cycled. I have nine guppies, three boys and six girls. I have a rubber nose pleco, and a bristle nose pleco.
The tank as been set up for two days now, today a friend of mine gave me her filter media, so hopefully itll help shorten my cycling time!
I just did my first testing, and its as follows.
NitrAte: Im saying 2 ppm, cause its definitely not as light as 0, yet way to light for 5ppm.
I will be looking for lighting, as the lighting i have now isnt good enough for plants. =/ But i will find some!
Do not test for Nitrate until you notice the NItRite level going up. It is pointless, the first stages you need to look are for the ammonia to go sky high, drop off and then NiTrite begin to rise and then suddenly drop off also.
If you are cycling with fish in, you will need to perform DAILY water changes to prevent the Ammonia from harming the fish too much or at worst killing them.
It can take 6-8 weeks so patience is the key, you will though because you have fish in need to do the water changes unless you have a lot of live plants.
I am already doing 10% water changes every day, i figured I would have to do them everyday until my cycle kicks in.
It will still take 6-8 weeks even with the seeded filter media?
Thanks for telling me not to test for nitrAte, thatll help alot!
About how far in should i expect to see the ammonia peak?
So, today, i added my two apple snails to the tank, and some of my AQ plants and pots. They came from my infected tank, though i left them outside to dry out in the sun for three days, and then soaked them in hot water. Im 99% sure they are disinfected, but that 1% still nags me..It only takes one parasite to start all over!
Did todays reading,
Water changes are going to be a bit more difficult than usual, since i can only change 10% at a time, or the filter stops working. Should I unplug the filter when i do w/c's? Or just take out 10%, fill it up, and then take 10% and fill it up again?
I feel that since the Ammonia is .25 that i should do 20%, maybe even 30%.
Or should i leave it alone?
My tentative stocking is:
1 Bristle nose pleco
6-8 Rosy red minnows
2 apple snails
possibly a rubbernose pleco, may add him to a different tank.
Testing today showed slight NitrIte! Whoo!
NI: .05-.1 [Not light blue, more purple, but nowhere near as dark as .25]
Heres a vid of the tank, and its three inhabitants. One Rosy Red minnow, and two apple snails. There are about eight pond snails too.

So, about five days ago, i bought water sprite! It ended up getting bullied around by my filter, staying in only one corner, which was the corner farthest away from my light!
Youll see, my light is very inadequate, though hopefully suinday, ill be getting another, mucho better light!!
So, i built sprite corrals. The pictures show what i mean. =]
My readings for today, after a 20% w/c at about 6pm, are:
NA: 1.0-2.0 [not yellow, not orange]
So, im thinking that those results are good enough for fish? I have the nine guppies in the QT tank, and im hoping to add three of them to the tank.
Ill add three more every day, or every two days, depending on what advise im given, and then, ive decided on my species, well a couple species, depends on who looks healthier.
I really like cherry barbs, so i think im going to buy a group of them, and see how they react to the guppies. As the first group i add after the guppies, itll be easy to tell how they react to one another, or whether they will work out in the end.
If the cherries arent looking good, or they dont work out, i have lemon tetras, pristella tetras, and flame tetras. Since i like the red of the cherries, i think ill go with the flames ad my second choice, though as a separate group, i like the pristella. and the lemons as a backup for those.
Im really excited that i may be able to add fish soon!
Whoops! forgot to post pictures!
Water sprite is awesome!
It helped me finish cycling my tank in two days, and the fish love it!
My tanks grown up a bit, in that i added the guppies, and some tall [sadly] plastic plants.

And ive added in the Bristle nose pleco, and the rubber nose pleco, and have discovered that the BN is an attention seeker, and the RN is the shy one.

And, when i moved all the gups to the big tank, the females all started giving birth, so i have alot of babies! The two videos above you can see a few, though in the pictures below, you can see more of them in the big tank, and alot more in my fry tank. And, it looks like the bottom of the fry tank is dirty, though its actually hundred of baby snails. 0.o I siphen them out, and put them in my bigger tanks when they get big enough, though theres always some more!
Also, i got more water sprite, and a plant with 'feather' in its name..im going to find out more!
Here as a few pictures, in case you wanna lemme know what it is. =]
Oh yeah Rescape!!
So, this is my new rescape.
Alsooo...I got new lights!
So here are my pics!

I added my parrots feather, though im not really sure how to have it in my tank. Floating is obvious. But if i bound them together, could i make it more organized? is ther ea way to bury it? Can you make the stems go straight up and down?..more research! =]
