Gravid Lyretail Molly This is my first aquarium with livebearers so I am new at this. I bought 2 female cremecicle lyretail mollies on Sunday and one of them is definitely gravid. Can anyone tell me from the pictures about how far along is she? http://fishforum.com/userpix/4404_aquarium_022_1.jpg The one on the left: http://fishforum.com/userpix/4404_December_006_1.jpg http://fishforum.com/userpix/4404_aquarium_017_1.jpg |
Gravid refers to egg layers who are carrying eggs. Your mollie is pregnant, carrying young, a live bearer. And, yes, she sure is. |
No, gravid means pregnant. We call a woman who has been pregnant more than once multigravida and someone who is pregnant for the first time primigravida. It is not reserved only for egg-layers. Yeah, I know she's pregnant, but I have never had a pregnant molly before so I was trying to see how far along she is. |
That's interesting. An egglaying fish is not pregnant obviously but I guess a livebearer could bcome gravid since we call the gravid spot the gravid spot and not the pregnant spot. In any case, it's hard to say how far along she is. Her size will depend on how many she is having, whether she has had fry before and how far along she i. One thing I ntoiced is that they become more square at the back in the last few days before giving birth. |
I think she is getting really close now :D She is a lot more square today and has been acting really crazy. She keeps swimming up and down along the back of the tank and headbutting any of the other fish that get in her way. |
I just found 3 fry in the tank! I transferred them to my 14 gallon. How do I make sure that they have enough food? At the moment they are all hiding inside this large colloseum. I also couldn't find anymore from in the 30 gallon, so either the other fish ate them all or she's not done yet?? http://fishforum.com/userpix/4404_fry_005_1.jpg |
Fry I have the same thing in my tank. I have a Female dalmatian molly, a Female yellow Mickey Mouse Platy, And a male lyre tail golden platy. The mickey mouse platy has had 3 fry and i have been feeding them Hikarii Bio-pure Dalphina frozen fish food. The lady at pets mart told me to feed little blobs to them every so often. I have them in a cup temporarily till i can get one. They are happy is there anything i should know. and i have no clue when i should release them ;-) And also i don't know how to get a good picture :-? |
